Elektrilevi announces winners of Construction Object of the Year 2021

15.07.2022

For the 12th time, Elektrilevi held a competition for Construction Object of the Year and selected the most remarkable construction objects of 2021 in two categories. Victory was awarded to the reconstruction of the Ranna substation and the pilot project for medium-voltage disconnectors.

The purpose of the competition is to highlight and commend project managers and Elektrilevi’s partner enterprises for high-quality work in network construction.

“When building the power grid, we have to take into account that the grid constructed today will have to operate for at least the next 40 years,” said Rasmus Armas, head of asset management at Elektrilevi. “This means that the quality of the work is of greatest importance. A job well done praises the doer and we want to highlight it and show our appreciation.”

The best construction objects were selected in two categories:

Medium/ low-voltage objects

Five proposals were submitted for the medium and low-voltage category, of which the pilot project for medium-voltage disconnectors was declared as the winner. In the course of the project, 11 disconnectors were installed on various medium-voltage power lines across Estonia. These are power line switches used in medium-voltage networks, which make it possible to switch off a small part of the network in the event of failure, therefore reducing the impact of electrical outages.

Regional substations

Two proposals were submitted for the category of regional and distribution substations, and the reconstruction of the Ranna substation was announced as the winner. The project included reconstruction of the entire Ranna substation, which is one of the three largest substations in Elektrilevi’s network. Among others, the substation provides electricity to Viru Keskus, Kaubamaja, ERR buildings, the Rotermann quarter, the Old City Harbour and the Tallinn Old Town. The work was carried out with customers experiencing no power outages.
